FAQs

How much space do guinea pigs need?

To ensure the physical and mental well-being of guinea pigs, it’s important to understand their behavior. Guinea pigs are active animals that enjoy walking, running, jumping, stretching, hiding, foraging, and chewing. They generally prefer to be near walls and tend to feel anxious in open spaces. Therefore, you should provide them with at least 0.3 square meters of space.

In addition, it is recommended to enhance their environment with tunnels, toys, and other accessories (but avoid using materials that could cause injury), as this will add variety to their living space. Guinea pigs should not be kept in their cages all the time; they should be allowed out for regular exploration to reduce feelings of being "captive." Guinea pigs are curious and love to play and explore, so giving them time to roam freely is crucial for their health.

Unlike hamsters, guinea pigs do not need a running wheel or bedding. To protect their feet, it is recommended to use soft chenille mats in their cage. Since guinea pigs benefit from a spacious, flat surface, it’s better to avoid building a second level that could lead to injury from jumping.

Can guinea pigs eat meat?

Guinea pigs are strict herbivores, with Timothy hay as their main food source, and they absolutely cannot eat meat. Due to their fast metabolism, their cage must always have a 24-hour supply of fresh Timothy hay and water. Additionally, fresh fruits and vegetables should be provided in measured amounts at regular intervals to supplement their vitamin C needs and maintain their health.

Do guinea pigs need baths?

Guinea pigs can be bathed, but avoid wetting their head and ears to prevent meningitis. Use no-rinse wipes for minor cleaning. Baths are unnecessary unless needed and should be at least a month apart. Always dry their fur immediately after bathing to prevent colds.
